Meet YM 76, a young and promising male leopard in Yala National Park. First recorded in 2023, he is the offspring of the Yala Female 67.

Leopards are meticulously identified by their unique spot patterns, which are as individual as human fingerprints. YM 76's distinctive markings, combined with his confident demeanor, suggest a bright future.

Did you know? Leopards are identified by their spot patterns, including the "whisker-to-spot ratio." This involves counting the number of spots above the upper line of whiskers on each side of the face. YM 76's unique pattern sets him apart from other leopards in the area.

Check out this tiny architect!

The white-browed fantail flycatcher builds the coziest little cup nest using natural materials like grasses, twigs and lichens which are sometimes held together using spider webs they collect.

Their nests are so well-camouflaged, you'd never find them without knowing where to look. These perfect little nests are found in sheltered spots like forks or under branches.

In this image we have a rather fluffy little chick, almost fully grown and patiently waiting for its parents to bring its next meal.

This captivating image by Indika Nettigama captures the essence of one of Sri Lankas most powerful aerial hunters, the crested hawk-eagle.

Crested hawk-eagles frequently hunt from great heights, allowing them to spot prey from a distance and plan their attacks carefully and their sharp, powerful talons are capable of delivering fatal blows to even large prey.

They opportunistically prey on a variety of animals including monkeys, reptiles and birds.

This magnificent raptor with its fierce gaze is a testament to the beauty and power of Yala National Park.

Like every aspect of the natural world, this behaviour, too, serves a purpose. Night times get a bit chilly, even in Yala Naional Park, and cats' core temperatures can drop quite a bit, especially when they take long "cat-naps", therefore a bit of sun soaking is necessary at times.

The leopard has gained a rightful reputation of being a powerful predator, a mysterious and secretive animal that blends seamlessly into its environment, always being the reason for the wilderness community being on high-alert.

However, as this incredible capture suggests, the truth is that cats are simply cats, and one thing that all big cats have in common is that although they have proven themselves to be the undeniable crown of the food chain, they also have the ability to portray themselves to be the most at ease, the prettiest and the most collected of all. Cats may be predators, but they too have gentle personalities when the situation allows for it. There are no words to describe being in the presence of Sri Lanka's most successful predator, in the most tranquil of circumstances.

On safari in Sri Lanka there's a permanent feeling of excitement, never knowing what's going to be right around the corner. But something we have to remember is to never take any sighting for granted; Spotted deer (axis axis) are a common sight in our dry zone jungles, yet one can never tire of seeing them.

How they portray the most beautiful examples of motherly affection and how they move so gracefully through the grasslands, or blend so seamlessly into the thicket as they take cover from potential dangers. A great author, Jim Corbett, even described them in one of his books as "the ballerinas of the bush".

The graceful flight patterns and stunning plumage of the Kingfishers have been recognised by many over the years, giving them influence over artists, modern mechanics and engineers which even contributed to the Shinkansen Bullet Train.

However, did you know that their grace and their beauty had even played a part in Greek mythology? In recognition of the deep love between Halcyon and Ceyx, the God's had turned them both into Kingfishers upon their death, and controlled the winds during a certain time of year, allowing them to nest peacefully and raise their young. This story of Halcyon and Ceyx being converted into Kingfishers and living again as peaceful beings is why we now refer to positive aspects of our past as "Halcyon days".

How spectacular is that? And here we are today, watching them hover above the waters on our safaris!
